When Sam first came to Freedom House Recovery Center, he sat slumped in his chair, seldom making eye contact.
He refused to answer questions except to utter a string of profanities. His father was not currently in his life, and his mother struggled to know how to help her son. His school struggled as well, and expelled him for his behavior. He spoke often of death. He was only 8 years old.
After a year of intensive therapy, Sam is in control of his emotions and no longer talks about dying.
He plays shortstop in baseball and is proving to be a leader in his classroom, instead of the disruptor. His mother gained the confidence and skills she needed to be a more effective parent to her son; she knew she had the support of the Freedom House team every difficult step of the way. And with the counseling and substance addiction treatment he received from Freedom House, Sam’s father has now returned to his son’s life.
