SOLID AS A ROCK
Over 50 Years of Recovery, Resilience, and Hope
As National Recovery Month comes to a close, we are filled with gratitude, renewed hope, and optimism. The many stories we heard of recovery and self-determination remind us of why our mission matters — and how powerfully our Freedom House Family shows up to support recovery.
When Freedom House opened its doors nearly 51 years ago, the world looked very different. Substance misuse and mental health challenges were often met with negativity and secrecy; in fact, even finding our location required courage and discretion. Instead of a sign, people were simply told to “turn at the rock on Airport Road” to find us.
That rock still stands today — solid and unshaken — just like our commitment to the individuals and families we serve. It is a reminder that Freedom House will always stand as a steady foundation for those ready to take their first steps toward healing.
Anyone who comes to Freedom House in search of recovery is welcomed with compassion, dignity, and the steadfast commitment of our staff. Our motto is “no matter who, no matter what, no matter when.”
Shawn Armstrong captures the heart of this commitment best:
I have experienced these words over the last 17 years at Freedom House. ‘ No matter who ’ embodies our commitment to those in the community who need our help, regardless of their race, political affiliation, or religious beliefs. ‘ No matter what ’ shows that, regardless of what may have caused a crisis, the goal is to step in, help, and support those who are ready to make a change. Finally, ‘ no matter when ,’ means that we provide support and assistance at any time… No one knows when a life-changing event will occur or the major setbacks it can bring — mentally and physically. So that’s why we’re here.” - Shawn Armstrong
Thanks to Shawn and the rest of our staff, our unwavering mission, and the generosity of our partners, we are able to offer the promises of recovery to all who seek it. Check out more on our leadership and our programs below.
